Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The giant pandas are most active between 8-9:30am during their feeding — arrive by 8am and go straight to the Asia Trail.
Park in the zoo lot ($25 all day, cashless) or take Metro to Woodley Park-Zoo station — street parking is a myth.
The Amazonia exhibit has free-flying birds and a 30-foot indoor waterfall — toddlers find it mesmerizing but hold on to hats.
Bring water and snacks — the zoo allows outside food and on-site options are expensive and have long weekend lines.
The Kids' Farm is closed in winter (November-March). Check the website before going with little ones.

A Real Parent's Story
Panda panda panda
“My daughter's obsession with pandas is well-documented in our house — panda pajamas, panda backpack, panda everything. When we walked into the Panda House and saw Tian Tian eating bamboo three feet away, her face went through five emotions in two seconds. She didn't speak for a full minute. Then she whispered he is real.”

We took the train down specifically for this. She turned 6 and all she wanted was to see real pandas. We got there before gates opened. The panda house viewing area has a two-minute max during busy times, but since we were first in the keeper let us stay for almost ten. Our daughter asked the keeper about panda poop. She learned more about giant panda digestion than any human should know. Best birthday ever.
