Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

The giant pandas are the zoo's biggest draw. Go to the panda house first at opening — they are most active in the morning.

2

Combine your zoo visit with Schonbrunn Palace and gardens. The zoo is at the back of the palace grounds — buy a combined ticket.

3

The Rainforest House is a walk-through tropical dome with free-flying birds and butterflies. Dress in layers.

4

The children's farm has a petting zoo, pony rides (weekends), and a large playground. Can fill an hour for kids 2-7.

5

The zoo restaurant has a decent kids menu but is pricey. Kiosks near the polar bear exhibit sell good sandwiches at better prices.

A Real Parent's Story

The oldest zoo in the world is also one of the best

Pandas in a Baroque palace garden. It sounds absurd. It is also wonderful. Our kids saw their first panda surrounded by Habsburg history.

I was skeptical about a 270-year-old zoo — surely it would feel outdated? Not at all. Schonbrunn Zoo has masterfully blended its historic heritage with modern animal habitats. The panda enclosure is world-class, and the ORANG.erie is the best orangutan exhibit I have seen. After the zoo, we walked through the palace gardens to the Gloriette — the kids ran on the manicured lawns while we took in the Vienna skyline.
