Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Arrive at 9:30 AM when the gates open. The pandas are most active in the first hour before it gets hot.
The zoo is huge. Skip the reptile house if your kids are under 6 — it's dark and the snakes spook most toddlers.
Bring a picnic. There are shaded benches everywhere and the zoo food is overpriced.
Combine with the National Museum next door — it's free for kids under 18 and has interactive exhibits.
The monorail from Ueno Station has elevator access at every exit. No stairs needed with a stroller.

A Real Parent's Story
She pressed her face against the glass for 15 minutes
“Our daughter didn't blink for 15 minutes watching the giant panda eat bamboo. I've never seen her that still. Ueno Zoo isn't fancy, but it's the most honest, wonderful zoo we've ever been to.”

We almost skipped Ueno Zoo for the more famous Asahiyama. So glad we didn't. The panda exhibit is up close — like, 2 feet away through glass. Our 5-year-old pressed her face against it and watched for 15 minutes without moving. The zoo is old-school (no flashy signs or VR), but the animals look happy and well-cared for. That matters more than any gimmick.
