Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Pack a picnic and blankets. The lawn in front of the Opera House view is the best free lunch spot in all of Sydney.
The Wild Words nature play area has logs, sand, and water pumps — bring a change of clothes because your kids WILL get muddy.
Start at the Art Gallery entrance and walk downhill toward the harbour. It is less crowded and the gradient is kid-friendly.
The flying fox colony at dusk is spectacular and free. Bring binoculars if you have them. They leave the garden around 7 PM from November to February.
The free guided Aboriginal Heritage Walk on Tuesdays is fantastic for curious kids aged 6+. Book via the website.

A Real Parent's Story
We spent $0 and had the best afternoon of our trip
“After blowing our budget on tours, we found the Garden. Free entry. Free play area. Free flying fox show at sunset. Our 3-year-old ran himself tired and fell asleep on the picnic blanket. Perfect afternoon.”

We had been in Australia for two weeks and our bank account was hurting. A local told us about the Botanic Garden. No entry fee. We bought sandwiches from Woolworths, sat on the grass overlooking the Opera House, and watched our son chase pigeons for hours. The flying foxes at twilight were an unexpected bonus. Best afternoon of our entire trip and it cost $12 for lunch.
