Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Seattle drizzle is a plus — animals are more active in light rain than blazing sun, and crowds thin to almost nothing.

2

The Zoomazium indoor play center is included with admission and saves the day when the weather turns truly miserable.

3

Bring rain gear even on sunny mornings — the zoo sits in a microclimate zone where afternoon showers appear fast.

4

The carousel opens at 11am and tickets are $3 — buy the unlimited ride wristband ($8) if your kid wants more than 3 rides.

5

Park in the lot on Phinney ($7 with zoo validation) — the neighboring Green Lake neighborhood parking is heavily ticketed.

A Real Parent's Story

Wet gorilla, dry laughter

It was pouring. The gorilla in the Tropical Rainforest exhibit grabbed a handful of leaves, held them over his head like an umbrella, and walked to a drier spot. My kids lost it laughing.

We almost skipped the zoo because of the rain. The gorilla — who the keeper later told us is named Leon — has a reputation for being a thinker. He has been observed using tools, solving puzzles, and apparently inventing umbrellas. My 6-year-old was so impressed that he used a trash bag as a gorilla-style umbrella for the rest of the week.
