Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Go in the morning during winter (9:30 AM opening). The polar bears are most active when it's below zero — they swim and play in snow.

2

The 'contact zoo' (petting area) is indoors and heated. Perfect for warming up for 20 minutes on a cold day.

3

Winter entrance fee (December-March) is reduced by 30%. It's already cheap at 800 yen for adults.

4

Combine with Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Park — both are a 5-minute walk and share the same leafy grounds.

5

The zoo is on a hill. Enter at the top gate (via bus) and walk DOWN through the zoo — saves climbing with a stroller.

A Real Parent's Story

The polar bear who tapped the glass to say hello

In -5 degree weather, a polar bear swam right up to the glass and tapped it with her paw. Our toddler tapped back. They 'talked' for 10 minutes through the glass. Worth the cold.

Coming from Finland, I wasn't sure a zoo in Hokkaido's winter would be special. It was. The polar bear exhibit is incredible — underwater viewing windows show them swimming above you. The snow monkey enclosure has a hot spring they bathe in during winter (adorable). We bundled up and spent 3 hours outside without anyone complaining. The heated indoor areas are perfectly spaced.
