Why Families Love Skyline Gondola and Luge Queenstown
Queenstown's most iconic family attraction, the Skyline Gondola whisks visitors 450 metres up Bob's Peak for breathtaking views over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range. At the top, the Luge track offers gravity-fuelled family fun with two track options: the Scenic Track (gentle curves and tunnels for first-timers) and the Advanced Track (steeper drops and hairpin turns for thrill-seekers). Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Book the 5-ride Luge Pass ($59) instead of the 1-ride option ($25). After the first run, kids understand the brakes and want to go faster.
Go in the late afternoon (3 PM gondola up) for daylight views, sunset photos, and the option to stay for dinner and see the lights come on over the lake.
The Scenic Luge track is perfect for ages 3-6. The Advanced track requires a minimum height of 110cm. Measure your kid before buying.
Bring a jacket even in summer. The top of Bob's Peak is significantly colder and windier than Queenstown town centre.
The gondola can close in high winds. Check the weather forecast before booking - a clear, still day is worth waiting for.

A Real Parent's Story
My 8-year-old beat me on the luge and I have never been prouder
“I grew up going to the Queenstown luge as a kid. Taking my own son 25 years later was emotional. He overtook me on the Advanced Track, looked back and yelled 'COME ON DAD!'”

The Skyline Gondola is a Queenstown institution for a reason. The views from the top are genuinely stunning - Lake Wakatipu looks impossibly blue and the Remarkables loom behind it. The luge is simple, safe, and addictive. My son did 5 runs and wanted more. My daughter (age 5) loved the Scenic Track with its gentle curves and tunnels. We had dinner at Stratosfare, which is pricey but the view makes it worth it. Stargazing after dark was the perfect end.
