Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Go in the afternoon (2 PM+). Morning crowds from schools and buses clear out by lunchtime.

2

The main tank has a seating area in front — sit and watch the whale sharks glide. It's mesmerizing for kids and adults.

3

The cafe on the 4th floor has tables facing the main tank. Grab a seat and let the kids watch while you rest.

4

Touch pool is on the 3rd floor. Hand washing stations are provided. Use them — the rays have a slimy coating.

5

Combine with the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel right next door — it's 112m high with amazing Osaka Bay views.

6

The aquarium is spiral-shaped — you walk down a ramp around the central tank. No elevators between floors.

A Real Parent's Story

We sat in front of the whale shark tank for an hour

Our 4-year-old sat cross-legged in front of the main tank for a full hour. A whale shark swam past 11 times. She counted. I just watched her face light up each time. Best hour of our Osaka trip.

Kaiyukan is the best aquarium I've ever visited — and I've been to Monterey Bay, Shedd, and Churaumi. The spiral ramp design means you gradually descend around the central Pacific Ocean tank, seeing it from every angle. The whale sharks are breathtaking — they're huge (up to 12m) but move with an impossible grace. The jellyfish exhibit is an otherworldly light show. The ring-tailed lemurs on the top floor are a fun surprise.
