Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Start at Al Jahili Fort at 8 AM (opens at 8) for the coolest part of the day. The fort takes about 1 hour with kids.
The fort’s photography exhibition of Oman’s landscapes fascinates kids — they can play 'spot the camel' in each photo.
Head to Al Ain Zoo after the fort (10-minute drive). The safari bus departs every 30 minutes and kids love riding on the open-air vehicle.
Bring sunscreen and hats. Even in 'cool' months, the Omani sun is intense by 10 AM.
The zoo’s petting area has goats, sheep, and a baby camel. The camel is the star — gentle and used to children.

A Real Parent's Story
My 6-year-old saluted the camel and the camel bowed back
“At the petting zoo, a baby camel was lying down. My son stood at attention, saluted, and said 'Hello, camel sir.' The camel lifted its head, blinked slowly, and lowered its head back down. I swear it was a bow. We laughed for 10 minutes.”

Oman surprised us. We came for the beaches but the fort-zoo combo became our favorite day. The fort is beautiful and kid-friendly (no steep stairs, wide ramps). The zoo isn’t huge but the Arabian animals are rare and beautiful. The oryx enclosure is stunning — white antelopes against the desert backdrop. The staff were warm and welcoming.
