Why Families Love Ulaanbaatar Zoo
Mongolia's only major zoo, located within the Ulaanbaatar city park complex. While modest by international standards, it provides a rare opportunity to see Mongolia's iconic wildlife up close including Przewalski's horses (takhi), Bactrian camels, Siberian ibex, golden eagles, and the elusive snow leopard. The zoo plays an important role in conservation education about Mongolia's unique steppe and Gobi Desert ecosystems.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The Przewalski's horse exhibit is the absolute highlight - these are the only truly wild horse species left on Earth and Mongolia is their ancestral home.
Visit in summer (June-August) when all outdoor enclosures are open. The zoo operates on a reduced schedule in the harsh Mongolian winter.
The Bactrian camel enclosure lets kids get surprisingly close - these two-humped camels are gentle and accustomed to visitors.
Admission costs under $1 making this one of the cheapest attractions in Ulaanbaatar.
The zoo is small (1-1.5 hours max). Combine with the National Park of Mongolia or the Bogd Khan Winter Palace.
Bring hand sanitiser and tissues. Facilities are basic by Western standards.
English signage is minimal. A translation app helps, or hire a guide from the entrance for $5.

A Real Parent's Story
We saw Przewalski's horses and our son cried with joy
“Our horse-obsessed 8-year-old has read every book about takhi. Seeing them in person at this modest zoo was more emotional than any fancy enclosure could deliver.”

My son has been obsessed with Przewalski's horses since he was 4. We specifically came to Mongolia to see them in the wild but we found them at the zoo first. He stood completely still for 15 minutes just watching them. A keeper noticed and let him help scatter hay. It was a simple, beautiful moment that no world-class zoo could have improved upon.
