Why Families Love Scienceworks Museum
Melbourne's premier hands-on science museum, located in a striking 1910s former sewage pump station turned into a futuristic science centre. Kids can ride a bike on a high-wire, experience an earthquake simulator, explore the human body through giant interactive exhibits. The planetarium features immersive 3D shows about space and dinosaurs. The Think Ahead gallery tackles climate science, while the Sportsworks zone lets kids measure their jump height and speed against Olympians.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Planetarium shows book out hours in advance on weekends. Pre-book online or arrive at 10 AM for the 11 AM show.
The Lightning Room show (Tesla coil) at 1 PM and 3 PM is loud and startling. Great for ages 6+, bring earmuffs for toddlers.
Take the train from Flinders Street to Spotswood station - a 15-minute ride through a lovely park.
The historic pumping station tour at 2 PM fascinates adults but bores under-10s. Take turns while one parent plays in the science gallery.
Pack lunch. The cafe is basic and overpriced. There are grassy picnic spots outside by the river.

A Real Parent's Story
My daughter asked to come back tomorrow three days in a row
“I had budgeted 2 hours for Scienceworks. We stayed 5. My 7-year-old daughter rode the high-wire bike 4 times, then spent an hour trying to beat her mum's sprint time. She asked to come back the next day. And the next.”

Scienceworks is a sleeper hit. I expected a dusty museum. What we got was a gleaming, modern science centre that rivals anything in London or Tokyo. The earthquake simulator genuinely shook us (magnitude 6.2 feels REAL), the planetarium show about black holes made my head spin. The Think Ahead climate exhibit made my daughter ask thoughtful questions all evening. We went back twice more during our week in Melbourne. Best thing we did.
