Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Hire a local guide at the entrance for about $20. They know the best kid-friendly routes and will show you hidden caves most tourists miss.

2

The electric cart is worth every yuan. The park is enormous and little legs will give out after 30 minutes of walking among the stones.

3

Visit the Yi minority village inside the park. The traditional dancing shows are free with admission and kids love the colorful costumes.

4

Bring a camera with a wide-angle lens. The stone pillars are massive and standard phone cameras cannot capture their scale.

5

The park takes 1.5 hours to reach from Kunming city center. Leave by 7 AM to arrive before tour buses. You will have the place nearly to yourself until 10 AM.

A Real Parent's Story

They played hide and seek for an hour among the stones

I sat on a bench while my two kids disappeared into the stone maze, popping out from different gaps, shrieking with joy. The best part is you can see them from above. Worst part is they think they are ninjas.

The Stone Forest is like a natural playground designed by aliens. My kids spent an hour playing hide and seek among the giant stone pillars. From the elevated viewing platform I could see exactly where they were, but they thought they were master ninjas. Every time they popped out from a new gap, they screamed with laughter. We hiked the easy loop trail, took the cart back, and watched a Yi dance show. One of the most memorable family days we have ever had.
