Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

It’s 800 steps down and an elevator back up — but the elevator is small and queues can be 30+ minutes. Bring snacks for the wait.

2

The ‘Junior Explorer’ audio guide (free) turns the tour into a treasure hunt with questions and puzzles — grab it at the ticket desk.

3

Temperatures are a constant 14-16°C underground. Bring jackets even in summer — your kids will shiver in t-shirts.

4

Book the ‘Miner’s Route’ if your kids are 8+ — it’s a 3-hour tour with hard hats, lanterns, and actual mining activities. Way more fun than the standard tourist route.

5

The underground chapel is stunning but kids get bored of salt sculptures after 45 minutes. The underground lake at the end is a great reset button.

A Real Parent's Story

We licked the walls. Yes, really.

The guide told us you can lick the walls to confirm they’re salt. My 8-year old did it immediately. Then my wife. Then me. We all stood there, tourists from 20 countries, licking a UNESCO site. Best family memory ever.

Wieliczka exceeded every expectation. The sheer scale is mind-blowing — you’re 135m underground, in a cathedral carved by hand over 700 years. The chandeliers are made of salt crystals. The underground lake has perfect reflections. The Junior Explorer audio guide kept my kids engaged for the full 2.5-hour tour. One of the few tourist attractions that’s actually better than the photos.
