Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The polar bear exhibit is controversial. Explain to older kids why polar bears in Africa need cooling systems.
Do the 10:30 AM seal feeding -- the seals get rowdy and the keeper commentary is excellent.
Buy a combo ticket for zoo + paddle boats at the entrance -- saves 20%.
If only Saturday works, arrive at 8 AM when gates open.
The zoo ranger tour (R50) goes behind the scenes to the kitchen and vet areas. Book at info desk.

We heard Joburg Zoo was just okay but it exceeded expectations. The enclosures are large, the animals visible, and the children's farm has goats and rabbits they can pet. Two lions were lounging 3 meters from the glass and our son couldn't stop laughing.
