Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The quetzal exhibit is a must-see - the national bird of Guatemala with stunning emerald plumage. It's in the aviary near the entrance.
Arrive at 9am when the jaguars are being fed. The zookeeper talk at 9:30am is informative and kids can ask questions.
The petting zoo (open 10am-12pm) has goats, sheep, and rabbits. Hand sanitizer is provided but bring wipes too.
The zoo is in Zone 5 of Guatemala City. Use Uber rather than walking - the area is fine during the day but traffic is heavy.
Combine with a visit to nearby La Aurora Botanical Garden (adjacent) which has incredible orchid collections.

A Real Parent's Story
She saw a quetzal and cried because it was too beautiful
“My 7-year-old daughter gasped when the quetzal spread its tail feathers. Two feet away, gleaming green and red. She actually cried. 'It's like a rainbow bird, Mami.' The zookeeper heard her and gave her a quetzal feather that had molted. She keeps it in a special box at home.”

La Aurora Zoo has come a long way. The old enclosures from the 1980s are mostly gone, replaced with spacious natural habitats. The reptile house is excellent - they have a massive green iguana that's over 40 years old. The children's area has a train that goes around the park. It's not a world-class zoo but it's authentic, affordable, and the animals look healthy and well-cared for.
