Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Visit during the morning prayer session (6-8 AM) — kids are fascinated by the chanting and the monks allow quiet observation.

2

Explain 'indoor voice' before entering — the monastery has a peaceful vibe that gets broken by loud children.

3

Spin the prayer wheels clockwise with the kids — they love the clicking sound and it's a good cultural lesson.

4

Bring some coins for the donation boxes — kids enjoy dropping them in and watching the offering rituals.

5

Combine with a drive through the beautiful Rumtek ridge — the views of the Teesta River valley are spectacular.

A Real Parent's Story

The monk who taught my son to meditate

A young monk saw my fidgety 7-year-old and spent 10 minutes teaching him how to sit still and breathe. He sat perfectly still for a full minute.

My 7-year-old son is basically a squirrel on caffeine. At Rumtek, he was wiggling during the morning prayers. A young monk, maybe 16, noticed and came over. He knelt down and started showing my son how to sit cross-legged, hands on knees, breathing slowly. My son, who never sits still, tried so hard to copy him. He stayed completely motionless for about a minute — a personal record. The monk gave him a little thumbs up. My son still talks about 'the day a monk taught me to be calm.'
