Why Families Love Dhaka Zoo
Bangladesh's largest zoo, also known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park, spanning over 200 acres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka. Home to a diverse collection of South Asian wildlife including Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, saltwater crocodiles, and the rare clouded leopard. A dedicated children's section with a mini train and playground makes it a favourite Dhaka family destination. The zoo also operates a successful breeding programme for the endangered Bengal tiger.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The zoo is enormous (200+ acres). Wear comfortable walking shoes and expect to cover 3-4 km. A stroller is essential for toddlers.
The Bengal tiger enclosure is the main draw - feeding time around 11 AM draws crowds as the tigers become dramatically more active.
The mini train runs a 15-minute loop through the park. It costs BDT 30 per person and is a guaranteed toddler favourite.
Visit on weekdays. Weekends are packed with local families and the zoo gets chaotic, especially around the tiger enclosure.
Winter (Nov-Feb) is the only comfortable season for a full visit. Summer heat and monsoon rain make it unpleasant.
The saltwater crocodile enclosure near the back of the zoo has some enormous specimens. Keep small children back from the fence.
Bring snacks and water from outside. The on-site food options are limited and hygiene standards vary.
The butterfly garden near the entrance is a peaceful spot for a break - hundreds of native Bangladeshi species flutter freely in a screened enclosure.

A Real Parent's Story
The tiger roared and our nephew nearly jumped out of his skin
“We were near the Bengal tiger enclosure when the male let out a full roar. Our 7-year-old nephew jumped back and dropped his ice cream. Then he laughed and asked for it to happen again.”

Dhaka Zoo is a bit rough around the edges but our kids love it. The tigers are magnificent and the roar is genuinely terrifying at close range. The mini train is a highlight - my nephew insisted on riding it three times. The zoo could use more shade structures and better signage, but for 50 BDT entry it's incredible value. We always pack a picnic and make a day of it.
