Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Go at 4 PM. The street comes alive with evening performers, the heat fades, and the sunset light on ancient buildings is gorgeous.

2

The sugar painting artists are a must. Kids spin a wheel and the artist creates a dragon or bird in liquid sugar. Costs about $2 and makes a kid's entire day.

3

Face-changing opera shows happen on small stages throughout the street. They are free to watch and mesmerize kids of all ages.

4

Sichuan food is famously spicy. Most stalls have no-spice options. Just say 'bu yao la' (no spicy) and point, or bring snacks for picky eaters.

5

Combine with Wuhou Shrine next door, an ancient temple dedicated to the Three Kingdoms. The temple gardens are peaceful and kid-run-friendly.

A Real Parent's Story

He tried stinky tofu because he saw a kid his age eating it

My 6-year-old who lives on chicken nuggets tried stinky tofu because the local boy next to him was enjoying it so much. He didn't like it. But he TRIED it. That is travel right there.

Jinli is touristy but in the best way. My kids loved the free puppet shows, the sugar painting where we got a dragon, and running around the old stone paths. The highlight was watching my picky eater see a local kid devour stinky tofu with such joy that he asked to try it. He made a face and spat it out, but he tried it. The ice cream I bought him afterward was the best compromise ever.
