Why Families Love Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site that doubles as Beijing most spectacular playground — 700 acres of imperial gardens, a massive lake, and a covered walking corridor that is perfect for when the kids need shade. The iconic Long Corridor (nearly a kilometer of painted wooden beams) gives toddlers the freedom to run without wandering off, while older kids will love the boat rides across Kunming Lake and climbing the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It is grand enough to impress adults but forgiving enough for a family day out.

A Real Parent's Story

When the Long Corridor Saved Our Afternoon

A surprise thunderstorm had us sprinting for cover, but the Long Corridor turned our soggy disaster into an art history lesson the kids actually loved.

We had been at the Summer Palace for maybe an hour when the sky opened up. No warning, just instant sheets of rain. I grabbed the girls and ran for the nearest covered area, which turned out to be the Long Corridor — a 728-meter covered walkway with 14,000 hand-painted panels on the ceiling. The rain kept coming so we just walked. My 8-year-old started counting the different paintings — scenes from Chinese mythology, landscapes, birds, flowers. She found Cinderella in one panel (or what she swore was Cinderella). The walkway connected to pavilions, tea houses, and eventually the marble boat. We spent two hours under that corridor, never got bored, never got wet. The rain stopped, the sun came out, and the kids said it was their favorite part of the day.
