Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

The heritage tram ride is free with admission and is the best part for under-6s. Ride it multiple times - each trip is different and the drivers love telling stories.

2

MOTAT is two sites separated by a 5-minute tram ride. Start at site 1 (Great North Road) for the aviation hall.

3

The H2O water zone is outdoor and hands-on. Kids WILL get wet. Bring a change of clothes.

4

Pack a picnic. The cafe is average but the grassy areas near the tram stop are perfect for lunch.

5

Combine with Auckland Zoo next door - a 5-minute walk, and a combo ticket saves 15 percent.

A Real Parent's Story

My train-obsessed son rode the tram 7 times

My 3-year-old is obsessed with trains. MOTAT has a real steam train AND a heritage tram. He rode the tram 7 times. Each time the driver let him ring the bell.

I took my two boys (ages 3 and 7) to MOTAT expecting a quick hour. We stayed 4. The older one spent an hour in the aviation hall pretending to be a WWII pilot, while the younger one rode the tram back and forth until I lost count. The vintage fire engines and printing press demo were unexpected hits. It is not a slick, shiny museum - it is a proper, hands-on, slightly dusty collection of amazing New Zealand history. That is exactly what makes it special.
