Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Artis Micropia (the microbe museum) is fascinating for older kids 8+ but skip it if your children are under 6 — it is mostly looking through microscopes.

2

The historic planetarium has English shows at 11AM and 2PM. Arrive 15 min early for good seats. Shows last 30 min.

3

Bring a picnic — the zoo has several lovely lawn areas surrounded by 19th-century architecture.

4

The indoor butterfly pavilion is a highlight for ages 2-6. Warm and humid with butterflies landing on visitors.

5

Combine with a walk through the Plantage neighborhood — Amsterdam's greenest area with lovely parks nearby.

A Real Parent's Story

The microbe museum was the surprise hit

We came for the lions and giraffes. Our 7-year-old spent 90 minutes in Micropia. A museum of microbes. Who knew.

Artis is a beautiful zoo — not huge, not flashy, but wonderfully atmospheric with old trees and historic buildings. The animal collection is solid (lions, elephants, giraffes, penguins). But the real gem is Micropia, the microbe museum. Our kids were fascinated by the giant microscope screens. They even got to swab their hands and see the bacteria grow.
